Types of MUGA

If you are currently considering a new MUGA for private use, a recreation centre, members club or educational institution, you might have already seen or heard that there are various choices of surfaces to install. Options include porous tarmacadam, synthetic turf and polymeric EPDM rubber. Naturally, the characteristics of each type confer distinct advantages, which one of our expert advisers will be delighted to discuss with you.

For outdoor sports activities, tarmacadam surfaces are very cost-effective. In particular, they combine excellent porosity and free-draining properties with durability and safety, making them ideal for netball and basketball. As well as these team games, polymeric MUGA surfaces are also a great selection for tennis coaching. The flooring features a top sealing coat of polyurethane paint, which is anti-slip for extra safety during intensive usage.

In contrast, needle punch surfacing or multi-sport synthetic carpet comes in a range of vibrant and bright colours. Because of its superior impact absorption qualities, this type of activity flooring is popular in primary schools. It enhances safety standards, whether installed indoors or outdoors in play areas.

Alternatively, to cater for teenagers and adults and the more substantial demands of football and hockey practice sessions, second-generation or 2G surfaces work well. Similarly, third-generation or 3G surfaces deliver high levels of performance during soccer and rugby practice.

To add the finishing touches to your sports area and increase the level of safety from stray balls, shuttlecocks and hockey pucks, we also supply rebound fencing. Available for installation up to three metres in height, our fencing comes in galvanised or smooth coated finishes.

MUGA Installation Services

Once you have decided on the best type of new MUGA for your sports or educational facility, it is possible to customise the installation to cater for your preferred games. Depending on the type of surface, you might opt for line and zone markings in contrasting colours, either painted onto hard surfaces or inlaid into synthetic carpeting. Whichever you select, you can rely on top-quality products to ensure the surface of your MUGA stays in top condition.

Usually, it is possible to build a MUGA court within two weeks, with completion of colouring and line markings within a further three to four weeks at the most. After completion of the new multi-sports area, it is important to plan routine maintenance and cleaning schedules. That way, the MUGA surface will last longer and deliver excellent serviceability and safety, assuring maximum availability for your users and their sports sessions.

Maintenance and Care

Of course, removal of dust and debris during regular cleaning is one of the best ways to minimise annual maintenance. Depending on the surface and its level of usage, periodic maintenance is advisable every twelve to eighteen months, depending on the intensity of usage. To care for your MUGA flooring and extend its service life, the services we offer include pressure washing, decompaction of infill (where applicable) or application of anti-slip paint.
